After admitting to sexual assault and using derogatory comments to describe his thoughts on women, Donald Trump gave maybe the worst apology in political history. His first apology said he was just using locker room talk. His second apology was used to bash Bill Clinton and deflect blame onto another Donald Trump who no longer exists. However, what amazes me is that there are those who still support this homophobic, xenophobic, misogynist, racist, narcissistic, con-man. The reasons they give prove that either they are ignorant or they are living in a universe not familiar to the rest of us.
Let’s discuss locker room talk. Yes, it can be rough. But I have spent a lot of time in locker rooms and real men do not talk that way in the locker room or anywhere else. There was a time I used to talk that way. Then I turned 17. At some point, I grew up and became a real man who does not disparage women or talk about grabbing a part of their body.
Now let’s talk about the apologies. Both of them were what I call apologies followed by a but. I was a domestic violence counselor for a time and worked with men who were perpetrators. Often, when they would apologize to their significant other, they would say something like, “I’m sorry I yelled at you last night, but if you hadn’t spent time on the phone with your friend last night everything would have been okay.” This renders the apology useless. I had a co-facilitator who used to say anything you say after but is bullshit. In both instances, Trump apologized and then said but, Bill Clinton had said and done worse. He also talked about Hillary saying bad things about the women who slept with her husband.
Trump also said that the comments were 11 years ago and he no longer was like that. Except that he has made similar comments about women since then. In 2010 according to a report in the New York Post, former female contestants on the show complained that Trump consistently objectified women. Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy claimed, “He asked the men to rate the women – he went down the line and asked the guys, ‘Who’s the most beautiful on the women’s team?’” In 2013 Trump tweeted, “26,000 unreported sexual assaults in the military-only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?” Here’s a clue Donald. The women didn’t expect to be sexually assaulted. Just last year in a CNN interview, he suggested Megyn Kelly’s debate questioning was a result of her menstruating, “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever.” In the immortal words of the Who’s Pete Townshend, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
But most amazing to me is the people who still support this obviously sick dangerous man. Some I think are just scared and he makes dazzling promises he will not be able to keep that makes them feel safe. Folks, there is not going to be a wall paid for by the Mexican government. We are not going to kick all Muslims out of the country. Seriously, we’re not. Some are probably undereducated. But some just refuse to see the truth. You can see this by the reasons they give for their continued support. Trump supporter Joseph Conigliaro said, “He made those comments when he was a businessman and a TV star. They mean nothing. People say a lot of things in private they wouldn’t say in public running for office. It’s freedom of speech. We weren’t paying him. He was in business.” So if a businessman or a T.V. star said he wanted to grab you daughter, wife, or girlfriend by her pussy you’d be okay with that. Misogynist behavior is disgusting no matter what job you’re applying for. Another supporter Anne McLain said, “He’s going to build a wall to look after our national security. He’s loves women. Regardless of what he said in a bar 10 years ago.” First, building a wall around our whole country would probably still not help out national security. Walls don’t stop the Internet, airplanes, or nuclear weapons. Second, he doesn’t love women. He loves beautiful women. Third, the comments were made on a bus while he was working and not in a bar. For these Trump supporters, I would like to buy a big map of America, I would write on the back, “wish you were here.”
See if the apology matches the comments from the bus.
Now the apology.
