You’ve Got to be Kidding Me

House members are actually saying they would have voted for the bailout if not for Nancy Pelosi’s partisan speech.
House minority leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said after the vote that passage would have been possible if it had not been for Pelosi’s “partisan speech.”
While her speech may have been ill timed she was right. Even if she wasn’t, your telling me the House Republicans would kill a bill the country reportedly needs because they are mad at Nancy Pelosi. Isn’t that partisan? Way to put country first House Republicans.

Krauthammer Gets It Wrong
Posted on September 18, 2008 at 10:53 pm by Madrigal Maniac Under National | Print This Post | Email This Post | Leave a Comment
The New York Times reported that Sarah Palin botched her interview with Charlie Gibson because she did not know what the Bush Doctrine was.
At times visibly nervous . . . Ms. Palin most visibly stumbled when she was asked by Mr. Gibson if she agreed with the Bush doctrine. Ms. Palin did not seem to know what he was talking about. Mr. Gibson, sounding like an impatient teacher, informed her that it meant the right of ‘anticipatory self-defense.
The New York Times: September 12, 2008
Not suprisingly, right wing pundit Charles Krauthammer came to her defense.
The New York Times got it wrong. And Charlie Gibson got it wrong. There is no single meaning of the Bush doctrine. In fact, there have been four distinct meanings, each one succeeding another over the eight years of this administration — and the one Charlie Gibson cited is not the one in common usage today. It is utterly different.
The Washington Post: September 13, 2008
There may be no single meaning to the Bush Doctrine, but I was not confused about which Bush Doctrine Gibson was asking about. In addition, I have talked to many people who follow politics and none of them were confused about which Bush Doctrine he was referring to. It was the one that changed a defense policy that had been in place for over 200 years. That we would not attack unless we were attacked. That is why it is called the Defense Department, Not the Attack Department. Krauthammer is the one who got it wrong. He is trying to use a convoluted logic to defend someone who obviously did not know the answer to the question any seasoned politician would understand. If she was confused about which Bush Doctrine Gibson was talking about, why didn’t she just ask him.
This video has been all over the place, but it’s worth seeing again.

Get Off of Your Freaking Cell Phone and Drive

All the research shows that driving while talking on a cell phone is dangerous. I admit I have been guilty of it. However, I try to use my headset or answer the caller and tell them I will call them back when safer conditions exist. But over the last few days I have seen the dumbest cell phone driving behavior by the citizens of Columbus. As everyone who lives here knows we had gale force winds Sunday that has rendered much of the city without power. This has included traffic lights. Mayor Coleman reminded everyone to treat intersections without lights as a 4-way stop. However, I have seen drivers on numerous occasions barrel through an intersection that has a non working traffic light. In every instance, they were talking on a cell phone.

Proof of Palin’s Inexperience
Posted on September 11, 2008 at 10:44 pm by Madrigal Maniac Under National | Print This Post | Email This Post | Leave a Comment
McCain was critical of Obama by saying he would rather win an election than win a war. Since McCain chose Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate, I guess we can say that McCain would rather win an election than have a qualified Vice President. And E.J. Dionne has the proof of her inexperience. This from the Washington Post.
John McCain’s campaign acknowledged this weekend that Sarah Palin is unprepared to be vice president or president of the United States.
Of course, McCain’s people said no such thing. But their actions told you all you needed to know.
McCain, Barack Obama and Joe Biden all subjected themselves to tough questioning on the regular Sunday news programs. Palin was the only no-show.
Rumor has it she was moose hunting.

Palin Demeans Social Workers
Posted on September 9, 2008 at 6:44 pm by Madrigal Maniac Under National | Print This Post | Email This Post | Leave a Comment
Governor Palin and others have been demeaning community organizers for a while now. As a Social Worker I am offended by this classless political tactic. I must admit, I doubt this is Governor Palin’s true belief. She is so new to the race, that almost anything she says early on is likely the thoughts of Karl Rove and his Republican henchmen. Here is a statement by the National Association of Social Workers.
The social work profession takes great pride in its community organizing roots and lauds the contributions of social workers and other professionals who commit their careers to helping residents of different communities organize their resources and take social action to improve life for themselves and their families. Small town reformers and urban community organizers have much in common.
The concepts of community organizing, community building and community development undergird the premise of American democracy. As a result of these efforts, institutions and officials often deliver more effective economic growth strategies, as well as mental health, health, and family services for people of all ages.
Community organizing is also the foundation of most successful political campaigns. Meeting fellow Americans in their communities and working with them to find solutions to problems that limit their potential is valuable and necessary work—with significant responsibilities.
The profession of social work was founded on the legacy of outstanding women leaders such as Nobel Laureate Jane Addams, who practiced community organizing in the Settlement Houses she created for the poor and working class immigrants of Chicago. The profession also counts Civil Rights icons such as Dr. Dorothy I. Height among its luminaries. It is fitting that both women are considered two of the most influential people in American history, and are inspirations for many of our country’s finest leaders.
The real fact is that community organizers and social workers are often the ones who work for free or low wages to help those who the Republican party doesn’t know exist.
